Clinical trials conducted at University of Connecticut School of Nursing , the United States found that pregnant women who consume omega - 3 fatty acids can significantly reduce the risk of postpartum depression , maternal depression before the birth .
For this study, the researcher included 52 pregnant women . 26 people were given 300 milligrams of fish oil capsules , and the rest were given a placebo pill . Each was asked to eat five times a week .
And the result shows positive scores on symptom reduction in postpartum depression in those who took fish oil on a regular basis .
Study leader Dr . Michelle Price Judge said DHA consumption during pregnancy at doses sufficient to have the potential to reduce depression . Although most take it in supplement form , the fish is more nutritious option .
But due to excessive fish consumption during pregnancy can harm the developing fetus . Experts recommend that mothers balance the amount of intake that will be eaten .
In addition , certain fish are estimated to contain pollutants such as mackerel , sardines and salmon trout should be limited to twice a week .
