Gamete cells haploid cells or gametes are specialized for fertilization . Gametes that can fuse identical in shape and size ( isogami ) or differ in one or both of these properties ( anisogami ) . The term 'male ' and ' female ' are often applied to gametes , but only serves to show the sex of origin , because the gametes do not have sex . When different in size , usually larger gametes called makrogamet , and the smaller called mikrogamet . Sometimes none on plasmogami in fertilization , in this case the fused nuclei can be considered as gametes .
Gametes are sperm or egg cells , especially mature and already functioning in sexually breeding process ; germ cells are formed from stem cells seed gametogenesis called spermatozoa , and the female is called the ovum .
